Manage Course - Import a Course, e-Pack, or Content Package

Note: Depending on administrator settings, the Import Content feature may not be available.

About Importing Content

Import Content uses the WebCT IMS Content Migration Utility to allow you to import the following into a WebCT CE course:

  • entire course
  • e-Learning Resource Pack (e-Pack)
  • content package, such as an individual content module, quiz, or survey

You can only import content that implements the IMS Content Packaging Specification 1.1.2 and IMS Question and Test Interoperability Specification 1.1. These specifications, which are defined by the IMS Global Learning Consortium, Inc, provide guidelines and suggestions to help companies and organizations create e-learning applications, services, and content packages that can work together within a learning environment.

What do you want to do?

Importing an entire WebCT course or an e-Pack | Top

You can import content that consists of either an entire WebCT course or an e-Pack. The content must be contained in a compressed file with either a .zip or an .epk file extension.

Entire WebCT course You can import an entire course that has been generated through the command line using the WebCT IMS Content Migration Utility. Only individuals with command line permissions, such as your WebCT administrator, can create these WebCT course packages. For more information, contact your WebCT administrator.
e-Pack

An e-Pack is a customizable online course package created by a publisher and designed for use with WebCT. If you want to import an existing e-Pack course that has been customized, a course package of the e-Pack must be generated using the command line as described above. You may also be able to import a new e-Pack. Only some e-Packs have been designed to implement IMS specifications. For more information, see www.webct.com/content.

If you are importing an e-Pack that requires Access Codes, the file will have a .epk file extension and students must enter an Access Code before they can access the course. For more information, see Access Codes.

You can import course content into an empty course or a course that already contains content. If the course already contains content, and some of the same tools exist in both courses, the contents of any duplicate tools will be merged. For example, if Glossary exists in both courses, the contents of each glossary will be merged into one Glossary tool. This applies to all tools except the following:

Tool/Page Description
Calendar/Chat/Mail/Syllabus Only the content contained in the original tool is retained.
Self-Test A separate link to the new content will be displayed on the Course Menu and/or Homepage.
Quizzes/Surveys A separate link will be displayed on the Course Menu and/or Homepage. Note: The new link contains the entire contents of Quizzes/Surveys (including the Question Database), not just the new content.
Organizer Pages If two Organizer Pages have the same title (e.g. Module One), a link to the new Organizer Page will be added to the Course Menu and/or Homepage but its title will be followed by a sequential number in square brackets (e.g. Module One [1]. If this title is already in use, then the 1 will be replaced by a 2, and so on).

Note: WebCT courses are encoded in either the ISO-8859-1 or UTF-8 character set. If you are importing a course or e-Pack that uses a different character set from that of the course you are importing into, the imported content will be automatically converted to the character set of the course. For example, content that is encoded in ISO 8859-1 will be converted to UTF-8 when imported into an UTF-8 course.

To import a WebCT course or e-Pack:

Warning: You can only import one e-Pack per course. Once an Access Code protected e-Pack (.epk) is imported, the new e-Pack content is permanently merged with your existing course content and the Export Content feature is no longer available. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you backup your existing course prior to importing an Access Code protected e-Pack.

  1. Click Control Panel. The Control Panel appears.
  2. Click Manage Course. The Manage Course screen appears.
  3. Click Import Content. The Import Content screen appears.
  4. Select Import a Course.
  5. In the Filename text box, enter the path and name of the file. If you want to upload a file from your computer or select a file from the WebCT Browser, click Browse.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Import. The Import Confirmed screen appears and the content is added to your course.

Upon import, the compressed file of course content is unzipped and placed in its own ims_import directory in My-Files. Each successive import generates a new ims_import directory that is numbered sequentially (e.g. ims_import, ims_import_1, ims_import_2, etc.).

Importing a content package | Top

You can import content packages that consist of either course content or assessment content. The packages must be contained in a compressed file with a .zip file extension.

Course Content

  • WebCT CE content module created using Export Content.
  • content created using a third party application that implements IMS specifications such as Microsoft® LRN 3.0. Note: Only LRN content created using Microsoft® PowerPoint® or Microsoft® FrontPage® can be imported using this feature. Manually authored content will not be imported successfully.

Upon import, a new content module is created. You select where the link to the content module appears.

Assessment Content

  • WebCT CE quizzes, surveys, and all questions from the Question Database created using Export Content.
  • quiz or survey created using a third party application that implements IMS specifications such as Respondus™ 2.0.

Upon import, the assessment content is automatically added to the Quizzes/Surveys tool and the questions are added to a new category in the Question Database. A separate link to the new assessment content is also added. You select where the link appears. The new link contains the entire contents of Quizzes/Surveys (including the Question Database), not just the new assessment content.

To import a content package:

For example, content that is encoded in ISO 8859-1 will be converted to UTF-8 when imported into an UTF-8 course.

      1. Select On an Organizer Page and from the drop-down list, select an organizer page. Note: By default, the link shows the item's title and a default icon.
